In 1870, all hell broke loose and essentially the staff were too terrified to show up for work or simply fled entirely. Mary Riddle took charge of everything at the Lazarota; she cooked, she cleaned, she cared for patients,. She rounded up additional volunteers and put those members of the staff who she was able to coax back into the hospital.
