The Importance of Smell in Navigation

For animals that aren't us, that aren't primates, the sense of smell is really important for interacting with the world at a distance. And I think one of the main complaints of people who suddenly lose their sense of smells is they feel a little bit emotionally adrift. Even in humans, the constant, even subconscious stimulation we get from our noses helps maintain a kind of emotional tone that helps us feel centered in the world.
