Secession in the Lower South

In january, lower south states begin to leave the union one by one. These conventions of these lowers states were even more explicit than south carolina. And you can see right from this part here, our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery,. The greatest, greatest material interest of the world. So they don't actually leave until march. But their governor, sam houston, was a unionist, and so tried to prevent it from going forward.
