Cult leader Marshall Applewhite has a quilting group sense of humor. Members have been portrayed as brainwashed victims, just mindless drones with bad matching haircuts who watched too much Star Trek and fell under the spell of a charismatic leader. According to sources, this brainwashing label only accomplishes two things: It helps the people left behind make sense of the tragedy because their loved ones are now victims instead of adherents. And it absolves the embarrassment surviving members feel about being a part of the cult in the first place.
