The Paradox of Modernity

Virginia Woolf is grappling with how to live with the paradoxes of modernity. How can we be both individuals with consciences and simply the products of our time? She thinks ultimately they are unlivable with. And part of the reason she says we should stop is that there is too much unheard suffering in the world, too much mute suffering. The intellectuals will hear certain kinds of distress, but most of human distress is inarticulate.
