The Great Enemy for Orwell Is Over and Needless Abstraction
If there's a great enemy for Orwell it's over and needless abstraction which has no political dimension to it. He did so much writing about this a lot of which we didn't read but he was reacting to the excesses of Stalinism. In some ways it's an attempt to vindicate common human or English decency and common sense in the face of any political movement can naturally fall into the tendency towards abstraction.
