Lou says she often records scene tape first. If you spend enough time with people, they generally kind of turn out to like you. And then they'll sit down for an interview. Lou saw that and decided to conduct sit down interviews second after she recorded them doing their thing. She said another reason to follow people around first is that you can learn something of their ways and habits which in turn can inform an interview.
