The reports collected by the Royal Society, including that report from Rodriguez Island 3,000 miles away, often spoke of cannon or gunfire. Milton connects to the technology available at the time. In many instances, people sent out rescue boats looking for a ship in distress because they thought these sounds were the gunfire of an SOS. There were ships that were about 900 miles away that described the sounds as thunder without any lightning.
