The 55th Massachusetts Regiment was the nation's second regiment made almost exclusively of black African-American freedmen. In June 1863, Nicholas Said left Detroit to join his brother and fight on the front line in South Carolina. The Union Army refused to pay them the same as white soldiers or give them equal treatment.
