CHAPTER

The Effects of Fast on Intra-Abdominal Injury

If you're a radiologist, your average sensitivity when using abdominal ultrasound is 92%, so you might detect 58 patients out of 100 with intra-abdominal injury. If you're an EM physician, however, the sensitivity is closer to 28%. You're only going to detect 17 of them using fast. So what's the bottom line? Put your probe on the lungs and the heart, but don't bother with the abdomen. And the lifetime cancer risk is somewhere between 1 in 500 and 1 in 1000 per CT scan.
