Just enough token features of ancient Islam serve almost as window dressing to give authenticity to modern Islam. How do you envision realigning with a more authentic Islam? Well, I said that we do have to go and re-navigate and part of the un-agrigating the past, which is a challenge because you cannot reconstruct the past in the way it is. First, we have to do an inventory of what it is that we actually hold in our mind in the contemporary period. And then to try to stitch together a mosaic of our past while also dealing with the contradictions, complexities, difficulties, challenges that the present imposes upon us.
