Myth of the Month 18: Robin Hood -- pt. 1: The Master of the Forest
Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
The Story of Robin Hood and Guy of Gisburne
In the ballads and jests, robin hood is portrayed as a devout christian. He prays repeatedly to saint mary - even though he's not seen in any religious context. The final scene where she is draining out robin hood's blood leads to his death. This you could see as a kind of sick, sinister reversal of giving birth... Here a churchwoman is draining robin Hood's blood out. There is this, you could say, a very deep seated theme of animus towards the church.
