How to Clone a Large Database
Thick cloning is where you can take a full copy of the data. It has questions how to speed it up and so on. The problem which is solved by another tool, Dmitry Fantain, is developing PG copy DB. This provides your ability at logical level to use multiple threads and avoid intermediate file backup files. But it also raises questions how long our transactions are on the source.
