It was two days before I was due to return to active duty that it happened. The doctors told me I'd probably always have a limp, but it wasn't infected and there wasn't the nerve damage they had been afraid of. After a few weeks I was walking on without too much pain,. But between the locals and the army it was a crowded, noisy place even at night. It was still hot, even in late December, but beyond the edge of the city there was a peaceful quiet that I just couldn't find anywhere else.
