Stokely Carmichael rose through the ranks of SNCC and began to take the organization in a new direction. He targeted a county in Alabama where blacks outnumbered whites four to one, but in which only two blacks were registered to vote. The faction within SNCC that was forming up behind Stokely Carmichael questioned whether participation of white activists was a net positive for the movement at all.
