What's Happening to Real Interest Rates?
In the last four years, we've seen a huge decline in real rates since the early 19 eighties. In fact, if you stot looking back in time to the seventies, sixties, back to the twenties and then back to the late nineteenth century, intrstrates have been declining close to where they are today. And one of these other episodes, interestingly for us, is precisely what happened in the 19 thirties, around the time, or the aftermath of the great depression. There's a fantastic new wealth of data thathas been put together by macro historians, i want to call them.
