Sunspots are essentially magnetic storms in the outer layers of the sun. There tends to be an 11 year cycle in the sun where there are times when there's a solar minimum, solar maximum. And at any given time, there are about 10 or 15 dark spots on the surface of the sun and they vary from day to day.
