The Dangers of Giving Gifts to Superiors

Xenophon claims that each province vied to send the great king gifts of its most unique and valuable products. Each province was eventually expected to provide the ame gifts every year. Those giving gifts to superiors often insisted on receiving a letter of non prejudice, stipulating that such a gift would not be required in the future.
