Exxon's total shareholder return was better than the S&P 500 consistently over a rolling period at a lower volatility. They zigdensagged correctly, maybe not perfectly, but they stood the test in time. When Lee Raimen was ready to retire, this was a point in time where I think Exxon recognized, perhaps began to need a friendlier face on the company.
