The One Receptor Per Neuron Rule

Olfactory sensory epithelium is filled with olfactory sensory neurons. The tips of these cilia are really jam packed with protein or odor receptors. Each neuron expresses only one of these receptors and that receptor determines the tuning properties of that cell. A typical environmental odor will activate 10 to 30% of the receptors.
