Non diagetic scores were first used in King kong and tod browning's dracula. Film critics didn't think the audience could understand where the music was coming from. So they had to re release all these shortswith a brand new score tacked on to them. They just had to include this music because people had grown to accept it so quickly. These long periods of silences that were, like, i guess, a part of the fill making for a moment, were now seen as completely pass and old fashioned.
