In the immediate aftermath of this, there's a huge rescue effort. Of course, they ave to scan some, inly, 300 square miles of ocean to recover all of the pieces. And based on these fragments, you have to figure out what actually happens. So one of the things they find out relatively soon is that as right at launch, you can see a litle puff of gray smoke from the back of one of the rocket boosters. That is the first clue of the oring failure. The temperatures are so high that the silly puddy, the puddy that they're putting on it, actually melts and closes the hole.
