Whistler's Mother

The painting was shown at the pennsylvania academy of the fine arts in 1881. American audiences had heard a great deal about whistler but hadn't seen his work until then. His mother had died earlier in 1881 so do we have any record of whistlers own feelings about this work being shown in his homeland in the year that she died? Is there any significance to the fact that it was in america at that time i am wondering if you can tell me what your thoughts are on whiskey's life and times as an artist. Do you think he would still be interested in working with us today or does he feel more comfortable living away from America where he is based now
