The Complexity of Roman Words
In the relative homogeneity of early Roman culture, in the period before the expansions and the great century of civil wars, this kind of homogenous culture allowed for a language in which the words were undefined. Only in the Civil War period and the period of imperial expansion, when it gets to be a huge, complex, heterogeneous society, that you see people begin to try to pin down words. So often you get words first defined after 500 years of, in the Republic, at the end of the public in the Civil war period.
