The Yacaruna Is a God, but Upside Down.
The Yacaruna can appear as people with misshapen feet and a backwards head or as a river dolphin. They have also been described as hairy beings with their heads turned backwards. Sometimes riding what appears to be a black crocodile. So basically whether it was out of stoking fear, spreading warnings or just what have you, they're anchoring this myth now in reality.
