The hacker created bitcoin out of thin air and selling them as fast as they could. A bitcoin was worth around 17 dollars at the time. This hacker sold so many big coins they drove the price all the way down to one cent each. The market had gone hay wire and hit rock bottom. But mark carpelis saw this crash happening and shut the servers down. He even had help from others to investigate the situation. They eventually foundhow the hacker got in and crashed the market. Mount gox came back on line with the price restored back to 17 dollars per bitcoin.
