Animals Have Consciousness or a Sense of Self

In the 16 hundreds, a French philosopher proposed that animals don't have consciousness. But dogs act like they are aware of things and also seem to have a sense of self,. Even wild dogs act as if they have asense of self. A problem with all these efforts is that we don't have access to what's going on in a dog's head.
