Lacan: The symbolic is structured atop a lack that it cannot process. A nothing, a no thing that wanders errantly through the symbolic as it's essential ingredient. In order to represent everything and have that claim be legitimate, nothing has to be left out. That according to Lacan in the 60s is the math theme for the drive.
