The Devil Incarnate
Our modern conception of the devil has been largely shaped by authors and artists who have made their own imaginative additions to the biblical character. Niccolo machiavelli was a bookish florentine bureaucrat whose ideas were thought to be so devious, so immoral, that he was often characterized as the devil incarnate. Despite having distinguished himself as a dedicated public servant, a capable member of florence's republican government and an eloquent historian, Machiavelli would always be best remembered for a slender little book of political advice known as the prince.
