Like a lot of updikes work, it is very directly autobiographical. Even this visit to the notary public across the street from his old house was something that happened in life - though perhaps not freighted with other things. There's just more freedom and more, if you're not remembering exactly and then you write fiction. And you can put meaning where there was.
