The Times of London, which also exists today, published articles on Ireland every single day. Its message was dizzyingly consistent: The Imperial government should not spend money on Irish relief. On 15 September 1846, its editorial declared that the very first importance to all classes of Irish society is to impress on them that there is nothing really so peculiar or exceptional in the condition they look upon as the pit of utter despair.
