The story goes that Lady Mary Montague was a beautiful popular woman. She got smallpox at 26, which left her pockmarked eyelashless. And horribly fearful of the disease, which had killed her favorite brother in the same epidemic. So she moved with her husband to Turkey, where she saw that smallpox wasn't viewed with the same terror as it was in England. There, she first encountered inoculation and tried to bring them to the places they lived.
