The Three Steps of the Descendant Into Sin

In temptation we do not act, but endure what happens to us. Just as we take no pleasure in this, so too we cannot incur any guilt therein. People suffered a long time the temptations of the flesh and yet he was so far from being displeasing to God because of this that God on the contrary was glorified by it. We may feel temptations though they displease us, however we can never consent to them unless they please us. Such pleasure is ordinarily the first step toward consent. The temptation causing delight in the inferior part of our soul covers the whole of it as it were with ashes and reduces the love of God to a spark. This is the strife and warfare
