Liberalism is a technology for preventing civil war. It was forged in the fires of hell, the horrors of the endless seventeenth century ous wars. People talk about liberalism as if it's just another word for capitalism or libertarianism. And it doesn't. Liberalism is none of these things. The notion of the human as as having inherent dignity and worth such that it should be protected by rights are one of the signal contributions that christianity has made to the world.
