In 1985, Deming was an intern at Ford's Wixom Plant in Michigan. He learned how to change the way paint stuck on a Lincoln Continental car. His work helped reduce annual rework costs from $150 million to about 20 million. "Experimentation is at the core of really being an innovator," he says.
