The identity of a B cell is the B cell receptor. The life and death of a B cells is defined by the success of the B cell receptors. A paper came out from Klaus Rojeski that showed that you could use this sort of genetic system to eliminate the cytoplasmic portion of CD79, which is the signal and apparatus of the B Cell receptor. And so it stood to reason to me that if you could interfere with signaling from B cells, you could have an impact on their fate.
