The Purpose of the Criminal Justice System

Foucot: The goal of the criminal justice system back then was not justice. There was no real focus on a balancing of the scales in any sort of way. He says punishments were often dramatic and always carried out in front of everyone in the public as a spectacle. But he adds that when a crime is committed, it directly calls into question the authority of the sovereign.
