The equal credit opportunity act finally gave women the right to get their own credit cards in 19 74. Before it was passed, banks could refuse to issue a credit card to an unmarried woman or require a married woman get her husband to cosign. Many banks required single, divorced or widowed women to bring a man with them to cosign for a credit card,. even someone much younger, like a nephew.
