The oracle of delphi was a community located on the lower slope of mount parnassus, and it was home to an ongoing group of prophetesses known as the pythia. Some prophets used involuntary dreams, while others used intentional meditation. A frequent element was some sort of substance that altered their perception of reality, like a powerful drug or herb.
