Constantine's Decision to Build Byzantium

Constantinian chose the site of Byzantium for strategic reasons or was it sort of the right empty space to build a new realm. I don't think Constantine was thinking about, hey, what happens is some enemy who's massively more powerful than the Roman Empire reaches the point where I'm going to build a city? He wasn't thinking that way at all. By putting it there, he clamped to the Balkans and Asia Minor and by extension Syria together and it worked. So I credit his genius with that.
