When you die, immediately before your death a, you're deemed to dispose of everything you own. So the tax actually falls on the person who's died, not on the people that are receiving things. In canada, we have exceptions for certain things because we're trying to, from a policy perspective, not tax certain things. The first da, it's very rare for there to be a tax bill, ecause most things are joint. We can defer almost all tax until the second spouse passes away. There are exceptions for farm property and fishing property in this country.
