The City of God
The city of god, or the fellowship to which augustine addresses his works, isn't the same as the church. It's not the same as any earthly institution. Earthly institutions are necessary. But that's not thesame as a community with god and human human beings who aspire to it. What augustine is doing is trying to comfort the christians after Rome has fallen.
