The challenge for the Stoics is to figure out how you can care about things, but not care too much. Epictetus' way of putting it is to say, if you place intrinsic value in things that are not directly under your control, then that's a recipe for neurosis. For you, the most important thing in the universe becomes something that's directly underYour control. It's really you conduct yourself. Whether you act with wisdom, justice, and integrity,. But then you're going to have to go around doing it. That's how you exhibit wisdom and share it with other people.
Elliot Chung, a student at Phillips Academy Andover, interviewed me recently for his new Philosophy for the Modern Mind podcast, and we decided to share our conversation on this podcast as well. We talk in particular about how Stoicism could be of practical benefit to young people, and the challenges they face today.
