You can't understand the most important things from a distance, bryan. You have to get close. In science and in research, proximity is baked in to the very heart of the discipline. We cannot make progress in creating a more just society if we allow ourselves to be disconnected from the people who are most vulnerable. And that's whether you graduate from harvard law school or whetheer you're co-founder of an organisation like The Sentencing Project. But for me, it's even more than that. I think sometimes when you're trying to do justice work, when you’re trying to make a difference, you need to stay proximate. Get close enough
