Lane's novel He Was a Man started out as a biography of Jack London, who was an early socialist. Lane realized that a command economy is really commanding people because economics is kind of what we do with our everyday life. She had grown up to not have too much respect for American traditions and values, so to speak. But then coming back to them after being in countries that didn't have them, they seemed almost as necessary as heir to her.
