The Light and the Darkness in the Gospel of John
Darkness is an image for the spiritual, non human, animating forces of evil and darkness. It's akin to the spiritual powers in the hebrew bible, or the principalities and powers in paul's thought. And it's the anti creation forces. If god's word is drawing people in to participate in the ordering of the world, the darkness is a part of what is dragging humans back into destruction and disorder and chaos. The whole story is going to be about how the darkness couldn't overcome the light. At least i think that's what's going on.
