Energy balance is actually fairly challenging to measure. You have to look at data that was generated using accurate methods. As body fatness increases, calory intake goes up. The more fat you accumulate, the more lean mass your body has as well. And that's the more metabolically active tissue that drives up both your calory expenditure and your calory intake. If you overfeed lean people, a lot of them will just burn off the extra calories. Overfeeding obese people can take those extra calories and just burn it off in other ways.
