Are We Individuals?

We are true individuals only to the extent that we affirm the general will. Our goals are valid only insofar as we consider them as appropriate to the species within the proper historical circumstances. This seems to be the inner meaning of Marx's thesis that we achieve true self-actualization only as species beings. To work in a truly human way means to have the opportunity to express a whole range of human potentialities.
