Life magazine was committed to a fairly conservative editorial position. He made his situation even worse when he suggested that the CIA were responsible for a handful of terrorist atrocities in Vietnam. His accusations, which appeared in both articles and the thinly veiled fiction of his novel, The Quiet American, had made him a sona non grata in some circles. But if he was going to survive and complete his mission, Green had to ingratiate himself with what remained of the French occupation.
