i don't think it's possible to understand the depth of motivation for atrocity in social conflict without coming to terms with the capacity for evil that's characteristic of the individual. I think this is a difficult, a difficult fact for normal individuals to grasp,. given that we're highly motivated to view ourselves as, if not precisely good, at least as relatively harmless. But the evidence that as individuals we are relatively harmless is very, very thin indeed.
